Duramax

New System Reduces Tailpipe NOx Emissions
The enhanced, legendary Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel is the most powerful Duramax ever built generating more horsepower and torque than any competitor. This proven powerplant gets the job done while being friendlier to the environment.
The improved Duramax uses the latest emission control technology, reducing Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions by a whopping 63%, when compared to the 2010 model. GM engineers determined the best way to accomplish this remarkable reduction of diesel emissions was to employ a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system that uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)
The new Duramax is capable of running on a clean burning alternative fuel blend that uses 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel fuels. Biodiesel is produced from domestic, renewable resources. B20 has demonstrated significant environmental benefits—its use reduces unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matter. B20 delivers these benefits with a minimum increase in cost.
Selective catalytic Reduction (SCR)
The SCR system is an after-treatment system, since it treats the vehicle’s exhaust after combustion.

Here’s how it works:
-A fine mist of DEF is injected into the exhaust while the engine is running.
-The heat from the exhaust converts the DEF into ammonia.
-When the ammonia, mixed with exhaust gases, reaches the SCR catalyst, the NOx emissions are broken down.
-The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) then captures soot to incinerate it during regeneration cycles.
-Water vapor, nitrogen and reduced emissions exit the exhaust system.
Allison Transmission
You can’t afford an unproven transmission when you’re towing up to 21,700 lbs. That’s why Chevy has beefed up the already legendary and nearly bulletproof Allison transmission. It’s been strengthened to handle the higher torque output of the new 6.6L Duramax engine, while also helping to improve fuel economy and provide seamless assistance with the new Exhaust Brake System. For the 2011 model year, the following improvements and features are included with the Allison transmission:
› A larger-diameter output shaft and more robust clutches
› Two overdrive gears for optimal efficiency
› Driver Shift Control (DSC) with tap-up/tap-down shifting
› Tow/Haul Mode for better control and improved cooling when towing or hauling heavy loads
› Cruise Grade Braking
› Power Take Off with a class-leading 250 lb.-ft. of torque
